The Dallas Public Library hosts Mrs. Laura W. Bush at Essilor Foundation's Kids Vision Fest
January 19, 2010

The Dallas Public Library hosted the Essilor Vision Foundation and the Kids Vision For Life Coalition on January 19 at the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library. More than 1,000 children were screened at the free festival, and approximately 500 kids received free eye exams and glasses.

Former first lady Mrs. Laura Bush was the guest of honor at Vision Fest and she spoke about the importance of good vision care. “As a former teacher and librarian, I appreciate the importance of eye exams for students. When a child cannot see well, he or she cannot learn well.  Learning to read is fundamental for education, and being able to see clearly is vital to literacy,” said Mrs. Laura Bush.

If vision problems aren’t addressed, research suggests children may face lifelong struggles with literacy, low self-esteem, unemployment, poverty and crime. The surprising reality is that one in four American children has an uncorrected vision problem – and the number can climb much higher in inner-city communities – yet research shows a large number of those children are not wearing glasses today. In fact, Essilor Vision Foundation found that 78% of the incarcerated youth in two of the Dallas County Juvenile Justice facilities had at least one vision problem.

Free and open to the general public, Kids Vision Fest provided free vision screenings to all children.  Free eye exams and new glasses – featuring the latest styles in eyeglass frames provided by Nouveau Eyewear – were offered to children ages 4 to 12 unable currently cannot afford vision care and do not qualify for other programs such as Medicaid.

Mrs. Bush began her visit to Kids Vision Fest by touring the Essilor Vision Foundation/Alcon Foundation’s Mobile Vision Van, a “vision clinic on wheels” where eye doctors conducted eye exams, children selected eyeglass frames, and glasses were edged and fitted.  After visiting with children in the games and activities areas, she read the book co-authored with her daughter Jenna Bush Hager – Read All About It! – to 20 children from the West Dallas Community School.

During the media event, Mrs. Bush was joined by Laurie Evans, director of Dallas Public Libraries; Dallas ISD Superintendent of Schools Michael Hinojosa; Dallas County District Judge Cheryl Shannon; and Laura Leppert, wife of Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert, to address the importance of good vision care for children.

Lochwood Branch Library Opens
Replaces Casa View Branch after 45 Years of Service

The opening of new libraries are few and far between. The long awaited Lochwood Branch Library opened to great fanfare on Saturday, November 14. It replaces the Casa View Branch Library that served the public for 45 years. The area has grown so much that a second branch White Rock Hills will open in 2011.

The opening ceremony began with the R. T. Hill Middle School R.O.T.C. flag ceremony and pledge of allegiance. State Representative Alan Vaught presented a proclamation for the dedication of the library and was followed by Councilmember Sheffie Kadane who gave remarks about the importance of the new branch to the community. He also recognized Jane Shouse as the single person who worked the hardest to make the Lochwood library a reality for the city.

The new branch is energy efficient, Wi-Fi- wired, and xeriscaped. It meets the Leadership Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). The furniture was made of 100% recycled materials or materials that came from within a 100 mile range. This is the third branch to have a black box theater which can accommodate many configurations. Computers are plentiful and the AT&T Teen Center has laptops available for the teens.

Tours and refreshments followed the ribbon cutting. Further information and photos are available at www.dallaslibraryfriends.org

Library of Congress Visits Dallas

The Library of Congress brought to life the unique historic and cultural treasures contained in the Library of Congress in a free program at the Dallas Public Library, 1515 Young St. on Monday, Nov. 24. Library of Congress educational specialists presented National Treasures, Local Treasures: The Library of Congress at Your Fingertips in two events.

Congressman Sam Johnson was present at the public event with school children in attendance. Congressman Pete Sessions attended the private evening reception with Dr. James Billington, the Librarian of Congress. Friends of the Dallas Public Library hosted the evening reception.

Dallas
was one of only five cities in the country selected to host the interactive presentation highlighting the largest collection of the world’s knowledge and
America’s creativity.

The program began with a clip from the film National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets, which prominently featured the Library of Congress in its storyline. Ongoing exhibitions, interactive kiosks, an inspiring multimedia "overture" on the collections and programs of the Library of Congress, and a continuing online educational experience can be found at http://www.loc.gov/index.html.

An exhibit of the Dallas Public Library’s most rare offerings were exhibited to enhance the local treasures element of the program.  The local exhibit featured selections from the Dallas Public Library’s most significant treasures drawn from the approximately 3,000 volumes contained in the Fine Books collection.

An Evening with Robert Edsel

The Friends annual fundraiser was held on October 30 at the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library. It was an elegant evening with a silent suction, seated dinner and a wonderfully entertaining program with local Dallas author Robert Edsel. Edsel's story of the plunder of the art and treasures of Europe and the subsequent recovery of thousands of pieces is a fascinating tale. The Monuments Men were dedicated to finding and returning the treasures. Their story had not been told before - and many never really shared their stories even during their lifetime. The book Rescuing Da Vinci and the DVD Rape of Europa are available at Barnes & Noble or online at www.barnesandnoble.com.
